The Gilded Fiji Taku From The New Zealand Mint

Coin Design Based on the Hawksbill Sea Turtle

Over in New Zealand, critically endangered Hawksbill sea turtles are sometimes affectionately nicknamed Takus by the locals.

To celebrate the beauty of these creatures whose habitat is the coral reefs of the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific Oceans, the New Zealand Mint have released the beautiful silver and gold gilded coin you see to the left.

Only 5000 of these proof coins have been minted and are available to purchase. Considering there are only around 3000 of the actual turtles alive today swimming in Fiji’s waters, both the coins and creatures are very rare.

If you want to check out another coin with a design inspired by turtles, check out this one from the Pobjoy Mint.
