The Platypus and the Perth Mint

The Duck Billed Platypus 1/2 Oz Silver Proof Coin

platypusHere in West Wales, spring is well and truly in bloom, so my apologies for the low post rate of late.

I’ve been out and about hiking the Pembrokeshire coastal path and enjoying this rare patch of lovely weather.

While perusing the latest silver coin releases from the cobbers over at the Perth Mint in Australia, I stumbled across this cute as a button Duck Billed Platypus half ounce proof from their Bush Babies II series.

If you fancy grabbing a few of these you may have to act quickly as this issue has a limited mintage of only 10,000 coins.

If you are ordering from the UK the Perth Mint offer free shipping wordwide on any order over $400 Australian dollars.

Their next release in this series is the Wombat, which I imagine will be just as cute as this one.

The Perth Mint’s Australian Map Shaped Kookaburra

All that Glitters is not Gold and Not All Coins Are Round

australian-map-kookaburra-2012After breakfast and a strenuous round of Actua 3 golf on the playstation that comes free with my rented cottage, I’ve been reflecting on the fact that not all coins are round.

Indeed, some are oval such as the Koban, a Japanese gold coin from the Edo period of feudal Japan, some square like this Australian seasons coin, and some heptagonal, like the British 20p and 50p coins.

However the coin featured in this post is one of the most unusual I’ve ever seen. I’m talking about the Perth Mint’s Australian kookaburra map shaped coin.

This series was released back in 2012 and is currently as rare as hen’s teeth, as it quickly sold out after the first mintage of only 6000.

The coin features 1 troy oz of silver, and was designed by Ing Ing Jong, one of the top graphic designers currently working for the Perth Mint in Australia.

It has been called a unique minting marvel, looking at the innovative design, I can see why.

Although the Perth Mint have no stock left, you may be able to find one from an independent dealer. Failing that, I just checked on ebay and can see a couple of these map shaped proofs listed there. Watch out for any dodgy dealers, only purchase from those on ebay with high feedback ratings.

Anyway, I’m off to work on my virtual golf swing, happy bidding!

The Kangaroo 2013 1oz Proof

The Kangaroo From The Perth Mint’s Australian Opal Series

opal-kangarooThe Perth Mint is one of my favorite coin establishments, they are always pushing the envelope when it comes to minting eye catching coins.

This 99.9% Pure Silver 1 oz proof coin you see to your right is the Kangaroo from the Australian Opal series, which is currently one of their best selling silver coins.

It has a limited mintage of only 8000 and comes with its own display case and numbered certificate.

The design of the kangaroo itself is detailed in pure opal, which is the national gemstone of Australia, indeed 97% of the world’s opals are mined down under.

For more information about this coin you can visit the Perth Mint.
