Daniel in the Lion’s Den

Daniel in the Lion’s Den From the Israel Mint

danielIt’s a beautiful sunny day here at Broad Haven, Pembrokeshire. I’m sitting at the Ocean Cafe overlooking the beach, listening to the smooth jazz they have on the radio and sipping a green tea.

I’m also taking advantage of their complimentary wi-fi to check out some interesting coin releases online and I just came across this lovely proof coin featured on the homepage of the Israel Mint.

The coin is inspired by the the story of Daniel, a prophet of the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob who found favour with King Nebuchadnezzar.

Daniel was blessed with the wisdom to interpret the King’s troubling dream in which Nebuchadnezzar saw a terrifying image of gold, silver, brass and clay.

More information about this can be found in Daniel 2.

Daniel was also able to serve under
Nebuchadnezzar’s son Belshazzar and interpret the appearance of the “Writing on the Wall” which appeared at Belshazzar’s banquet.

This handwriting prophesied an imminent end for the Babylonian kingdom.

The account of this can be found in Daniel 5.

Daniel also served under Darius the Median and was found to be the wisest in the Kingdom, however jealousy soon arose in the hearts of Daniel’s fellow princes and they conspired against the prophet and had him thrown into the Lion’s den.

However, God was with Daniel and sent an angel to seal the mouth’s of the lions. Darius saw this as divine protection and declared that the God of Daniel was the living God. This account can be found in Daniel 6.

Darius made a declaration about God to his Kingdom:

“…..He delivereth and rescueth, and he worketh signs and wonders in heaven and in earth, who hath delivered Daniel from the power of the lions…..”

Looking down at Broad Haven beach and out to the Irish sea, reflecting on the book of Daniel, I realise I would like to pick up one of these beautiful coins.

Designed by Aharon Shevo, It is the 17th in the Israel Mint’s wonderful “Biblical Art” Series, and in my opinion worthy of it’s place in any silver coin collection.
